Dear festival participants, On 25 August 2005, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Director General of UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura, at the ceremony of the foundation laying of the International Mugham Center in Baku, expressed their confidence that the center would attract people from all the countries that pride themselves in the fact that they have preserved, nurtured and fostered the art of mugham. At last, the Center has opened its doors wide to all mugham fans. Guests from many different countries will assemble here on March 18th to 25th to partake in “Space of Mugham” International Festival. I am certain that these extraordinary and memorable days will be abounding in technical debates around the aspects of mugham, beautiful performances of classical and symphonic mughams, concerts given by winners of the international mugham contest, stage appearances of renowned maestros, and manifestations of the resplendence of the ancient and everlastingly living art of mugham. I am laying my great trust in this festival, which brings together researchers and musicians from the immense area of the mugham reign, hoping that the event will become a powerful spur to this masterpiece of the mankind’s non-material legacy and will make its particular contribution to the promotion of the intercultural dialogue.
